AML Spotlight: The Boy Who Chose Not To See

Tonight for the Spotlight… The BoyWho Chose Not To See (Child for short).

For Child, the thing that comes to mind the most is its tone. It has a very unique tone—something I would consider both a triumph and a detriment. The initial idea for Child was to create something shocking and risqué and outside our comfort zone. The um, err… blood drinking scene from the second episode was among the first concepts we came up with and it was definitely something that was quite uncomfortable for us. But this was the type of story we set out to create. But…, speaking to that—let’s start with tone being a detriment.

This really, specifically applies to episode 2, it being so sexual—so violently sexual. It was hard for us to show off Child because of its tone. There was this embarrassment we had (and still have) about it. We constantly were in situations where we wanted to show friends episode 1 knowing they would like but not wanting them to see episode 2. It wasn’t an embarrassment of, “oh, this thing we made was bad,” but of people seeing it and going, “oh, you’re that kind of person.” In the end, we still put it out there, because we ultimately are proud of it. And, funny enough its tone is part of the reason why (segue!).

Tone as a triumph! The Boy Who Chose Not To See is a funny little story. Looking again at episode 2, no matter how vulgar and shocking the actual story is, the way it’s told is almost the complete opposite. There’s no swearing and the sexual elements are told either poetically early on or almost clinically later on—never vulgarly despite the story. Then there’s our narrator, Mr. Benjamin Nickels, himself, who, unlike the narrators and hosts of our other shows seems to take pleasure in talking down to the audience. Both hostile and friendly, you’re a cretin and so is he and he’ll make sure you know. In these ways, I feel Child’s tone gives the show some kick that makes it more alluring than it would have otherwise been.

Then again, what do I know? Nothing! Nothing at all. But, with your help (read feedback) my cohorts and I can gain all the knowledge of the world. We simply need you to take a quick and easy Survey (or comment below). Until next time ya cretins, be as good as ya can.
